The new Simrad FS70 Trawl sonar was released late 2005. The bright yellow subsea unit is already becoming a usual sight on fishing vessels, and more and more professionals are becoming aware of the usefulness and possibilities made available by this new Simrad FS70product.

The Simrad FS70 is manufactured by Kongsberg Mesotech i Canada, a company with years of experience with trawl sonars, high resolution scanning sonars and similar products for subsea applications. Teamed up with the PI System expertice from Simrad in Norway, the new trawl sonar truly provides you with “the best of both worlds”.

Placed on the headrope on the trawl, the yellow Trawl Unit (picture) contains both a high resolution vertical sonar, as well as an echo sounder. The information is fed up to the vessel’s bridge by means of a cable.

At the same time, the Trawl Unit communicates with Simrad’s well known PI Catch Monitoring sensors. This communication is wireless, and the sensors can be placed anywhere on the trawl depending on its application. The most common sensor is the PI Catch sensor, which tells you when the cod end of your trawl is filling up.

The visual presentation provided on the bridge gives you a clear picture of the trawl opening, as well as information from the sensors. This sophisticated solution allows the fisherman full control of any type of fishery, and by means of the information he will be able to increase the quality of the catch and his efficiency at sea.
